- 2 groups based in Oakland California, the Black Messenger and the Black Resurgence make up a dance style of a ROTC cadence drill called the catch the style which lead the way to other funk dance form such as stickin and stepin.
- The Last poet record their album the Last Poets(metrotone) reciting spoken word over Jazz beats and instrumentation.

- SuperKool 223 sets new standard in graffiti by replacing the cap on his spray paint can with one from oven cleaner making a new style of writing
- Soul Train begins airing on Television.
- Afrika Bambaata organizes the Universal Zulu Nation on November 12. This marks the formal beginning of the hip hop culture.
- Spin was the first graffiti artist to win the Taki award for best graffiti pieces by the New York Times.

- DJ begin to speak over the records they are spinning with lines "and ya don't stop" are used, marking the beginning of MC

- The Music industry begin using the term rap music.
- Disco fever open in the Bronx, the first club to play only rap music.
- The Roland 808 is created, the most used electronic drum machine.
- The robot(dance) is introduced to the mainstream by Charlie Robot.

- BET(black entertainment Television) goes on the air.
- Member of High Times Crew are arrested for break dancing in the subway and photos appeared in the New York Post these are the first photos of break dancing to be published.
- The sequence Girls appears on charts with their single funk you up and inspires more females to pursue rap.
