CORNBREAD
1965
The graffiti movement begin in Philadelphia popularized by a young teenager using the name Cornbread
1970

  • 2 groups based in Oakland California, the Black Messenger and the Black Resurgence make up a dance style of a ROTC cadence drill called the catch the style which lead the way to other funk dance form such as stickin and stepin.
  • The Last poet record their album the Last Poets(metrotone) reciting spoken word over Jazz beats and instrumentation.
1971
DEMETRUIS
  • TAKI183(Demetruis) first graffiti artist to gain recognition for his tags in the new media with an article in the New York Times
The New York Police Department forms a Bronx youth gang task force under command of deputy inspector William Lakeman( the hip hop Police been here)





1972 
Afrika Bambaata
  • SuperKool 223 sets new standard in graffiti by replacing the cap on his spray paint can with one from oven cleaner making a new style of writing
  • Soul Train begins airing on Television.
  •  Afrika Bambaata organizes the Universal Zulu Nation on November 12. This marks the formal beginning of the hip hop culture.
  • Spin was the first graffiti artist to win the Taki award for best graffiti pieces by the New York Times.






1974
  • DJ begin to speak over the records they are spinning with lines "and ya don't stop" are used, marking the beginning of MC
1975
DJ Grand Wizard
  • Coke La Rock and Clark Kent are the first MC team hooking up with DJ Timmy Tim,Kool Herc to form Kool Herc and Herculoids.
  • DJ Grand Wizard Theodore invents the scratch.






1976
Lee Quinones
  • July 4th Caine, Mad 103 and Flame One were the first to paint an entire train(freedom Train)
  • Grand Master Flash invents quick mixing( the process by which shorts sound are combined to create longer more intricate sounds.
  • Lee(Lee Quinones) begins painting murals with advanced techniques that are full of political commentary.





1977
ROCK STEADY CREW
  • Grand Master Flash develops the technique of cutting back-spinning and phasing on turntables
  • The Fabulous five(graffiti artist) paint an entire train calling it the Christmas train.
  • Jimmy D and JoJo form rock steady Crew in the Bronx.
  • Popping started by Boogaloo Sam, the first hip hop dance. locking is also popularized.
  • Jack the Rapper (Jack Gibson puts together his 1st annual music convention which induced rap music.
1978
  • The Music industry begin using the term rap music.
  • Disco fever open in the Bronx, the first club to play only rap music.
  • The Roland 808 is created, the most used electronic drum machine.
  • The robot(dance) is introduced to the mainstream by Charlie Robot.

  • The electric Boogaloos perform on soul train and became popular worldwide .




1979
SYLVIA ROBINSON
  • The first Label dedicated to rap music was Sugar Hill records founded by Sylvia Robinson.
  • The single super rappin is released by GrandMaster Flash and the Furious Five.
  • The first known female rapper Sweet Tea records the single vicious rap
  • Sony introduces the first walkman (tps-L2)
  • Rock Steady Crew develops breakdown by adding more acrobatics, Crazy legs and Lenny Len joins the crew
  • Lee(Lee Quinones) has an exhibition in Italy.
  • The movie Warriors, which tells the stories of New York City street gangs and subway graffiti artist is released.
1980
BLONDIE
  • Kurtis Blow single the breaks is certified gold and eventually platinum. the first rapper to perform on soul train.
  • Blondie gives graffiti artist Fab 5 Freddy pops on  her song Rapure introducing to the mainstream lead singer Deborah Harry is credited as the first white rapper.
  • BET(black entertainment Television) goes on the air.
  • Member of High Times Crew are arrested for break dancing in the subway and photos appeared in the New York Post these are the first photos of break dancing to be published.
  • The sequence Girls appears on charts with their single funk you up and inspires more females to pursue rap.
